The Audio-Technica Audio-Technica ATH-AD500 aren’t the most expensive headphones in the long line of AIR cans released by Audio Technica, but that is not a reason to not give them a chance. Initially the quality was about the same and I was disappointed that I had spent so much money so have sound slightly better. I decided to give it a few days of intensive use and see what it was like after a week.

Massive improvement after a week, the Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 headphones were reaching highs and lows with clarity I’d not heard before in headphones. Months after use they were really performing well with a large variety of music and they sounded totally different to how they did when I first got them.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 headphones can be driven by portable devices such as IPod’s with ease and will also sound fine on a desktop. When driven by a headphone amp they sound slightly better and presenting instruments together but you don’t need one to use these and enjoy them.

There are a few things to note, the first is that the Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 headphones fold flat so can be stored with ease. The headband strap is very strong and if you don’t adjust them properly can make your head hurt. Finally, is the cable is quite short so if you do things from a distance from your music source you will need an extension cable. The cable while flexible is very small and will be the first thing to break if you are too rough with them.

So all in all the Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 headphones are a great investment for portable and stationary audio devices, capable of providing audible enjoyment under pretty much any situation. The Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones have excellent punch and are very suitable for drum tracks. The bass and low range is where they do have some drawbacks. First of all, you should make sure to “burn in” your headphones to get the best low range possible. What does this mean? It means that the quality of the bass improves a lot with playing time. This is true for all studio headphones, but the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones have an especially noticeable difference in this regard. The best thing you can do is to hook up the headphones to an amplifier and play a bass track for several hours before using them. The most noticeable improvement is about 30 minutes in, so you should never judge the sound quality of the headphones immediately out of the box.

Sound leakage and sound insulation – Audio-Technica Ath-M50 Review

It is safe to say that beyond a certain price-range, most headphones have almost the same sound insulation and leakage. Audio Technica ATH-M50 is no exception and the sound leakage is very small – even in a silent studio it would be difficult for anyone to hear them, even if they are standing next to you. Sound insulation is also a non-issue and you won’t have any problems with that, even in noisy environments. The sound stage of the headphones is very good and is comparable to a good pair of studio loudspeakers. The center-stage is very clear and distinguishable and so are the left and right channels. This is where the headphones have a slight drawback, when compared to higher-priced models. They do clamp your ears a bit and this becomes especially noticeable after a few hours of usage.
